Official Pokemon booster packs also contain randomized cards, but Pokemon states what a current pack contains and says that it cannot guarantee a specific Pokemon or card type. A third-party mystery box adds another random layer around those products. The seller, not The Pokemon Company International, controls that outer layer.

Check the Pokemon mystery box odds

Ask for counts, not phrases such as "chance to pull" or "up to 300 EUR in value." A buyer needs to know how many top prizes exist and how many boxes share the pool.

For a fixed run, use:

Prize odds = number of that prize / total number of boxes

If 2 cards appear across 100 boxes, the chance of receiving one of those cards is 2 / 100, or 2%. That number still tells you nothing about the other 98 boxes. You need the full prize table before the odds help.

Check whether the seller draws from a fixed run or keeps adding boxes. Also ask whether every advertised prize remains available. A prize pool that changes during the sale needs a current count, not a launch-day graphic.

Calculate the expected value in EUR

Expected value is the average contents value across the disclosed pool. It is not a promise about one box. Calculate it by multiplying each result's EUR value by its chance, then adding those weighted values.

Expected contents value = sum of (result value x result probability)

That does not prove a particular mystery box is bad. It shows what the seller's pool would need to justify. Your values also need to match the exact item, language, and condition. A seller's stated "retail value" is not a substitute for prices you can verify.

Separate the floor value from the average

The floor value is the value of the least expensive disclosed result. Expected value is the average across all results. A high top prize can raise the average while most buyers receive much less.

Use three figures together:

1. Delivered cost: what you pay.
2. Expected contents value: the pool average from your own price checks.
3. Floor value: the lowest result you could receive.

For the example above, the floor is 20.00 EUR, the expected value is 33.00 EUR, and the delivered cost is 44.90 EUR. Those numbers describe the risk more clearly than the 300.00 EUR top prize.

Compare guaranteed sealed products first

If a mystery box guarantees booster packs, divide the delivered cost by the guaranteed pack count. Do not include a possible bonus pack until you weight it by its odds.

Guaranteed pack cost = delivered mystery box cost / guaranteed packs

This comparison shows what the surprise costs. If four known packs cost 24.00 EUR elsewhere, the remaining 20.90 EUR is the premium for an unknown result. You can then decide whether that is how you want to spend it.

Check the seller and listing

The European Commission advises online buyers to verify a seller's contact details, compare specific reviews, and be wary of deals that look too good to be true. It also says marketplaces should show whether the seller is a trader or a private person because consumer rights differ.

Before paying, save the listing and record:

• The seller's name, address, and contact route.
• Whether the seller is a trader or private person.
• The full prize pool and the time you checked it.
• The box number or method used to allocate boxes, if stated.
• The item price, delivery charge, and all checkout costs.
• The returns and complaint process.

EU online-shopping rules require clear information about the product, total price, shipping costs, and delivery time when you buy from a trader. Do not assume the same rights apply to a private sale or a seller outside the EU.

The listing should still match what arrives. Keep screenshots, the order confirmation, and an opening video for a costly purchase. They can show what the seller promised and what arrived.
